Van Cleef & Arpels

Vintage Gold and Diamond ‘Tissu Serge’ Bracelet

A beautiful gold and diamond ‘Tissu Serge’ bracelet by Van Cleef & Arpels c.1950s, designed as a highly flexible continuous uniform double row of rectangular flattened looped links arranged in a chevron pattern and set down the centre with pairs of round brilliant cut diamonds to a concealed clasp. ‘Tissu serge’ refers to the twill fabric which inspired the pattern of this bracelet. Van Cleef & Arpels iconic ‘Thread’ inspired jewels of the 1950s took various different forms (including the Tissu Serge jewels such as this) and sought to explore the relationship between haute joaillerie and haute couture. Fabric and textiles were a continuous source of inspiration for Van Cleef and this fascination filtered through into their designs in more or less literal ways. This stylish bracelet whilst conceived by VCA was executed by the workshop of renowned master craftsman Georges Lenfant and the quality of his craftsmanship can be felt instantly on handling this lovely jewel.
