Van Cleef & Arpels

A Delightful 18ct Gold and Gem-Set ‘Love Bird’ Pendant

A charming ‘Love Birds’ pendant by Van Cleef & Arpels c.1957, the circular pendant designed as a pair of love birds in 18ct yellow gold, the bodies set with a turquoise cabochon, the eyes with single cut diamonds, perched on a swing with rope twist arch embellished with two faceted sapphires and two rubies and three diamonds, suspended within a circular tapering frame with sunburst pattern and rope twist edge, all from an oval pendant loop. This delightful jewel is quintessentially 1950s and would have been part of the La Boutique collection. It has a lovely romantic feel to it, the articulation allows the birds to swing freely back and forth on their perch creating movement and interest. The sunburst pattern on the frame catches the light and it looks as good worn on a short chain as it does a long one.
