A Stylish Gold, Emerald and Diamond Bird Brooch

A stylish French gold and gem-set bird of paradise brooch c.1950s, realistically modelled in 18ct yellow gold and platinum the beautiful bird perched on a single branch, the body set with eight overlapping oval emerald beads secured on gold threads, the head and neck embellished with round brilliant cut diamonds and the eye with a single marquise ruby, the long beak in polished gold, the tail formed of articulated flattened gold chains in a tapering V-shape with diamonds at the top and the wings of twisted yellow gold threads, all to a double pin clip fitting. Many of the big French jewellery houses of this period created wonderful bird brooches in all different sizes, styles and gems. They remain very collectible today as there is so much variety within the genre, each bird having its own unique characteristics. The natural world and birds in particular provided a rich seam of inspiration from which designers could draw either literally or stylistically and interpret in jewels.
