A Fabulous Pair of Vintage Gold and Pavé Diamond Ear Clips

A pair of vintage gold and diamond earrings by David Webb c.1960s, the oval earrings of domed bombe design set throughout with round brilliant cut diamonds in a pavé style setting in platinum, the outer edge encircled with a row of stylised pointed leaf motifs in 18ct yellow gold with ribbed pattern and graduating in size from smaller on the inner edge (that closest to the face when worn) to larger around the opposite side, all to clip fittings. These are a wonderful pair of statement earrings by one of the great American jewellery designers of the 20th Century. The diamonds are all of high colour and clarity and have been beautifully matched, they are bright and lively and the excellent craftsmanship of these earrings is showcased in the fineness of the pavé setting. The yellow gold wraps around the edge hugging the diamond centre which has a high pointed dome, the apex of which leans towards the face reflecting the light from the diamonds towards the wearer. Shape and volume informed every piece Webb designed and these earrings are no exception, he loved yellow gold and believed that women wanted jewellery that would not only express their personalities but that would carry them from lunches to post dinner drinks and dancing, he sought to design pieces that they could wear as comfortably and confidently during the day as at night. These earrings are a beautiful and classic example of his work.
