A Green and Purple Jade Bracelet with Positive Chinese Characters

An unusual vintage jade bracelet by Liberty & Co London c.1930s, the bracelet set with three green jadeite jade oval cabochons and three purple jadeite jade oval cabochons all set in 18ct white gold alternating with one of six different Chinese characters for ‘Antique’, ‘Good Luck’, ‘Artistic’, ‘Friendship’, ‘Money’ and ‘Beautiful’, all formed in openwork white gold, to a concealed tongue and box clasp with safety chain. The bracelet is in its original fitted leather box the inside of which is pinned with a translation of the symbols. It is a lovely piece with good colour jades and positive sentiments, it would make a thoughtful gift for a friend or loved one.

Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843 – 1917) opened his eponymous shop on London’s Regent Street in 1875 and stocked it with a range of imported household goods.  He was devoted to the vision of an Eastern Bazaar and determined to change the current look of homeware and fashion.  As such his carefully curated collection of ornaments, fabric and objets d’art proved irresistible to a society intoxicated by Japan and the East.
