A Striking 18ct Gold Multi-Row Bib Bead Necklace with Shell Motifs

A striking 18ct gold multi-strand bib style necklace by Lalaounis circa 1980s, formed of a central section with five rows of gold beads in a pattern of plain rondelles alternating with pairs of double twist beads, this terminating either side in two ram’s horn motifs of twisted spiral form whilst the back section is formed of two rows of the same beads, all to a concealed tongue and box clasp. The motifs and techniques used in Lalaounis jewels, which are renowned for their inherent ‘Greekness’, are inspired by the country’s ancient art which Ilias Lalaounis so admired. Early in his career he would spend many hours in museums where he studied jewellery and artefacts from ancient civilisations and whilst doing so says that he “felt that a new, wide horizon was unfolding before me.” This lovely necklace is a wonderfully rich colour and its flexibility allows it to sit beautifully around the neck. The beads move a little on their hand woven chains and it would make a great statement necklace that could be dressed up or down.
