An 18ct Gold and Pear Shape Citrine Toi et Moi Ring

A vintage 18ct gold and citrine dress ring by Bulgari, circa 1980s, the ring of stylised ‘Toi et Moi’ design set to the front with a matched pair of pear-shape yellow citrines set horizontally within a wide tapering band of yellow gold, the gems surrounded by a figure of eight motif, the shoulders smoothly tapering into the band.

Directors Notes

The ‘Toi et Moi’ (meaning you and me) idea is symbolised by the two stones, sometimes matching as in this case, other times contrasting. Perhaps the most famous example of this style of ring is the engagement ring given to Josephine de Beauharnais by Napoleon Bonaparte and it is one that has recently seen a revival in popularity with many different interpretations of the idea.

In 1880 a young Greek silversmith, Sotirios Boulgaris, arrived in Italy looking to build a new life. It didn’t take him long to establish himself and after a couple of false starts he opened his eponymous shop on Via Sistina in Rome in 1884.  He Italianised his name to Sotirio Bulgari and the firm that would eventually come to represent the very essence of ‘la dolce vita’ was born.
